    Worked out, not stated: this takes Jacob’s coming before Pharaoh, at 130 (Genesis 47:9), as that same second year, when Joseph was 30 + 7 + 2 = 39. So Jacob was 130 - 39 = 91 at Joseph’s birth: year 2108 + 91 = year 2199.

  • Years lived
  • The flood
  • Enoch: taken, he did not die
Dig deeper: when was Abraham born?

Genesis 11:26 says Terah lived seventy years and begat Abram, Nahor and Haran, and this timeline uses that number. Readers differ here: Terah died at 205 (11:32), Abram was 75 when he left Haran (12:4), and Acts 7:4 says he left after his father was dead. Read together, many count Abram born when Terah was 130, which would put Abraham, Isaac and Jacob 60 years later than shown.

Where to read: Genesis 11:26, Genesis 11:32, Genesis 12:4, Acts 7:4

Dig deeper: what the numbers show

    Worked out, not stated: this takes Jacob’s coming before Pharaoh, at 130 (Genesis 47:9), as that same second year, when Joseph was 30 + 7 + 2 = 39. So Jacob was 130 - 39 = 91 at Joseph’s birth: year 2108 + 91 = year 2199.

Born: Abraham was 100 when he was born (“an hundred years”, Genesis 21:5). Year 1948 + 100 = year 2048.

    Lived 180 years (“an hundred and fourscore years”, Genesis 35:28). Year 2048 + 180 = year 2228.

Alive at the same time: Shem, Arphaxad, Salah, Eber, Serug, Terah, Abraham, Sarah, Ishmael, Jacob, Esau, Joseph.

Read it: Genesis 21:5, Genesis 35:28

  15. Jacob147

Jacob born year 2108, died year 2255, 147 years

Born: Isaac was 60 when he was born (“threescore years”, Genesis 25:26). Year 2048 + 60 = year 2108.

Lived 147 years (“an hundred forty and seven years”, Genesis 47:28). Year 2108 + 147 = year 2255.

Alive at the same time: Shem, Salah, Eber, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Esau, Joseph.

Read it: Genesis 25:26, Genesis 47:28

  16. Esauworked out?

Esau born year 2108, how long he lived is not given

Born the same year as Jacob, his twin (Genesis 25:24-26): year 2108.

How long he lived is not given, so his bar has no end.

Alive at the same time: Shem, Salah, Eber, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph.

Read it: Genesis 25:24, Genesis 25:26

  17. Josephworked out110

Joseph born year 2199, died year 2309, 110 years

Joseph was 30 when he first stood before Pharaoh (Genesis 41:46). Seven years of plenty followed, then the famine (Genesis 41:53). In the second year of the famine (Genesis 45:6) he sent for Jacob: “come down unto me, tarry not” (Genesis 45:9).

    Lived 110 years (Genesis 50:26). Year 2199 + 110 = year 2309.

Alive at the same time: Isaac, Jacob, Esau.

    Read it: Genesis 41:46, Genesis 41:53, Genesis 45:6, Genesis 45:9, Genesis 47:9, Genesis 50:26

  • Years lived

To Solomon

From Jacob’s family moving to Egypt to Solomon building the temple. The Bible gives the pieces, but the 430 years can be counted from two starting points, so here are both.

Counted from Jacob going to Egypt

  • In Egypt: 430 years
  • The Exodus to the temple: 479 years

Counted from God’s promise to Abraham

  • The promise to Egypt: 215 years
  • In Egypt: 215 years
  • The Exodus to the temple: 479 years

The first way makes the time in Egypt 430 years. The second makes it 215. Either way, Moses was 80 when he spoke to Pharaoh, just before the Exodus, and lived to 120.

Dig deeper: where the 430 and the 480 come from

Exodus 12:40 says the children of Israel sojourned 430 years. Galatians 3:17 says the law came 430 years after the promise. 1 Kings 6:1 says Solomon began the temple in the 480th year after the Exodus, in the fourth year of his reign.

Some count the 430 from when Jacob went down to Egypt (year 2238): the Exodus in year 2668, the temple in year 3147. Others count it from the promise to Abraham, when he left Haran at 75 (year 2023): the Exodus in year 2453, the temple in year 2932, which leaves 215 years in Egypt. Every sum is in Sources and sums.

Dig deeper: Moses, Aaron and others

Moses was 80 and Aaron 83 when they spoke to Pharaoh. Moses died at 120, Aaron at 123. Levi, Kohath and Amram, Moses’ father, lived 137, 133 and 137 years, and Joshua 110, but the text does not say when they were born, so they are not drawn.

Where to read: Exodus 7:7, Deuteronomy 34:7, Numbers 33:39, Exodus 6:16, Exodus 6:18, Exodus 6:20, Joshua 24:29

The kings

The kings of Judah, one after another, from Solomon’s temple to Jerusalem’s fall. Each bar is how long that king reigned, as the Bible says. Added end to end, it is about 430 years.

Then Babylon took Judah, and the land lay desolate 70 years, as Jeremiah said.

Dig deeper: how this is added up

Solomon reigned 40 years (1 Kings 11:42) and began the temple in his fourth year (1 Kings 6:1). In his fourth year three years had passed, counted the same way as the 480th year, so 37 years are drawn for him here. Jehoahaz and Jehoiachin reigned three months each. Athaliah’s six years are the years young Joash was hidden while she reigned (2 Kings 11:3).

Adding the reigns end to end gives about 430 years. Some reigns may have overlapped: Jotham was judging the people while his father was a leper (2 Kings 15:5). Worked out, not stated: if any king’s years were counted from such a time, the true span was shorter.

Where to read: 1 Kings 11:42, 1 Kings 14:21, 1 Kings 15:2, 1 Kings 15:10, 1 Kings 22:42, 2 Kings 8:17, 2 Kings 8:26, 2 Kings 11:3, 2 Kings 12:1, 2 Kings 14:2, 2 Kings 15:2, 2 Kings 15:33, 2 Kings 16:2, 2 Kings 18:2, 2 Kings 21:1, 2 Kings 21:19, 2 Kings 22:1, 2 Kings 23:31, 2 Kings 23:36, 2 Kings 24:8, 2 Kings 24:18, 2 Kings 15:5, Jeremiah 25:11, 2 Chronicles 36:21

New Testament

The New Testament does not give a lifespan for anyone it names, so there are no life bars counted from the Bible here. What it gives are moments.

  • Jesus, twelve years old, at the feast in Jerusalem Luke 2:42
  • Jesus, about thirty, when he began Luke 3:23
  • Anna, a widow of about 84 years, in the temple Luke 2:37
  • Jairus' daughter, twelve, raised Mark 5:42
  • The man healed at the temple gate, above forty Acts 4:22

Coming next: a switch, off at first, to add bars dated from Roman history (Herod, Tiberius, Pilate, Paul’s journeys), each with its source named and marked so it is never mixed up with the Bible’s own numbers.

Dig deeper: how the New Testament is dated

Luke dates the start of John’s preaching by the rulers of the day: “the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea” (Luke 3:1). Those years are known from Roman history, not from the Bible.

Where to read: Luke 3:1, Luke 2:42, Luke 3:23

Daniel’s seventy weeks

In Daniel 9, Gabriel tells Daniel that seventy “weeks” are set for his people and Jerusalem. Most readers take each week as seven years, so 490 years. The text names three numbers of weeks: 7, 62 and 1.

  • 7 weeks and 62 weeks: from the commandment to rebuild Jerusalem unto Messiah the Prince; the street and the wall built again in troublous times (9:25)
  • After the 62 weeks: Messiah cut off (9:26)
  • 1 week: the covenant confirmed with many; in the midst of it the sacrifice made to cease (9:27)

Readers differ on three things: how the 7 and 62 weeks go together, when the count starts, and when that last week happens.

The last week came right after

Jesus’ ministry and death, and the fall of Jerusalem.

The last week is still to come

There is a gap before it. The text does not say “gap”; this reading takes it from other verses.

It was all fulfilled earlier

Under the Greek king Antiochus, before Jesus.

The site does not choose between them.

Dig deeper: what the verses say
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Daniel 9:24
Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Daniel 9:25
And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Daniel 9:26
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:27

Where to read: Daniel 9:20-27

Dig deeper: when does the count start?

The text says the count starts from “the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem” (9:25). The Bible records decrees that readers point to: Cyrus (Ezra 1), Artaxerxes in his seventh year (Ezra 7), and Artaxerxes in his twentieth year (Nehemiah 2). The years for each come from outside the Bible; they are coming next, each with its source named.

Where to read: Ezra 1:1-4, Ezra 7:7, Nehemiah 2:1-8

Dig deeper: why some see a gap

9:26 puts the Messiah cut off “after” the 62 weeks, before the last week is described. Jesus spoke of “the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet” as still to come (Matthew 24:15). Revelation speaks of 42 months, half of seven years (11:2, 13:5). Readers who see a gap put these together; the text itself does not name one.

Where to read: Daniel 9:26, Matthew 24:15, Revelation 11:2, Revelation 13:5

Sources and sums

Every figure on the timeline, the sum that gives it, and every verse it rests on, quoted in full from the King James. Where a step is worked out rather than said in so many words, it says so. Each number’s King James words must be in its verse before the site goes up.

Outside the Bible: nothing yet. When the New Testament’s Roman dates and the years of the decrees in Daniel are added, each outside source will be named here, quoted or linked, and labeled as outside the Bible.

Lived 180 years (“an hundred and fourscore years”, Genesis 35:28). Year 2048 + 180 = year 2228.

And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. Genesis 21:5
And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years. Genesis 35:28
Jacob

Born: Isaac was 60 when he was born (“threescore years”, Genesis 25:26). Year 2048 + 60 = year 2108.

Lived 147 years (“an hundred forty and seven years”, Genesis 47:28). Year 2108 + 147 = year 2255.

And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. Genesis 25:26
And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years. Genesis 47:28
Esau

Born the same year as Jacob, his twin (Genesis 25:24-26): year 2108.

How long he lived is not given, so his bar has no end.

And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. Genesis 25:24
And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. Genesis 25:26
Joseph

Joseph was 30 when he first stood before Pharaoh (Genesis 41:46). Seven years of plenty followed, then the famine (Genesis 41:53). In the second year of the famine (Genesis 45:6) he sent for Jacob: “come down unto me, tarry not” (Genesis 45:9).

Lived 110 years (Genesis 50:26). Year 2199 + 110 = year 2309.

And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. Genesis 41:46
And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended. Genesis 41:53

And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage. Genesis 47:9
So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. Genesis 50:26
Jacob into Egypt

Jacob was 130 when he stood before Pharaoh, having come into Egypt (Genesis 47:9). Year 2108 + 130 = year 2238.

And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage. Genesis 47:9
The Exodus, first count

The sojourning of the children of Israel was 430 years (Exodus 12:40-41), counted here from Jacob going to Egypt: year 2238 + 430 = year 2668.

Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. Exodus 12:40
And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. Exodus 12:41
The Exodus, second count

The law came 430 years after the promise (Galatians 3:17), counted here from Abram leaving Haran at 75 (Genesis 12:4): year 1948 + 75 = year 2023, + 430 = year 2453. That leaves 215 years in Egypt.

And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. Galatians 3:17
So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. Genesis 12:4

Solomon’s temple

Begun in the 480th year after the Exodus, in the fourth year of Solomon (1 Kings 6:1). The 480th year starts 479 years after: year 2668 + 479 = year 3147, or year 2453 + 479 = year 2932.

Levi lived 137 years (Exodus 6:16), Kohath 133 (Exodus 6:18), Amram 137 (Exodus 6:20), Joshua 110 (Joshua 24:29). The text does not say what year any of them was born, so they are not drawn.

Where readers differ: Abram’s birth

Genesis 11:26 says Terah lived seventy years and begat Abram, Nahor and Haran, and this timeline uses that number. Readers differ here: Terah died at 205 (11:32), Abram was 75 when he left Haran (12:4), and Acts 7:4 says he left after his father was dead. Read together, many count Abram born when Terah was 130, which would put Abraham, Isaac and Jacob 60 years later than shown.

And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Genesis 11:26
And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran. Genesis 11:32

Jotham and his father

Jotham was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land, while his father was a leper (2 Kings 15:5). Worked out, not stated: whether his sixteen years were counted from then.

And the LORD smote the king, so that he was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house. And Jotham the king’s son was over the house, judging the people of the land. 2 Kings 15:5
The seventy years

Judah would serve the king of Babylon seventy years (Jeremiah 25:11); the land lay desolate to fulfil threescore and ten years (2 Chronicles 36:21).

And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. Jeremiah 25:11
To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years. 2 Chronicles 36:21
The New Testament ages

The ages the text gives at one moment: Jesus twelve (Luke 2:42) and about thirty (Luke 3:23); Anna a widow of about 84 years (Luke 2:37); Jairus’ daughter twelve (Mark 5:42); the healed man above forty (Acts 4:22).

And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. Luke 2:42

Daniel’s numbers

Seventy weeks (9:24); seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks (9:25); after threescore and two weeks (9:26); one week, and the midst of the week (9:27). Read as weeks of years: 70 × 7 = 490 years, 7 × 7 = 49, 62 × 7 = 434. That a week is seven years is a reading.

Revelation’s forty and two months (11:2, 13:5) are three and a half years: 42 ÷ 12 = 3.5. Readers who see a gap in Daniel tie these to the midst of the last week; that is their reading.

Daniel 9:27
But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. Revelation 11:2
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. Revelation 13:5
